Car Tour
THE NORTH WALES COAST AND THE VALES OF CLWYD AND CONWY
FROM LLANDUDNO

Llandudno from the slopes of the Great Orme The popular resort of Llandudno lies below Great Ormes Head (679ft). There is a cable tramway and a cabin lift. Leave on the Conwy Road, A546, along Gloddaeth Street. Travel to Deganwy where there are magnificent views across the Conwy estuary to Conwy Castle. Continue along through Llandudno Junction to the roundabout to the A55 (signed Chester and Bangor) and then take the 3rd exit onto the A470 signed Betws-y-Coed.

Pass through Glan Conwy and drive through the lower Conwy Valley to arrive at the pleasant market town of Llanrwst. Here, there is an opportunity for refreshment at Ty Hwnt i'r Bont tearooms (National Trust) which is on the far side of the little bridge.

Continue on the A470 4 miles to the junction with the A5, and turn right across the famous Waterloo Bridge and into Betws-y-Coed www.betws-y-coed.co.uk. Stop here and browse among the shops if you wish. Leave Betws-y-Coed back across the Waterloo Bridge, following the A5 towards Llangollen. After a mile or so, take the B4406 on the right towards Penmachno, passing Penmachno Woollen Mill – well worth a visit. Continue on B4406 through the village of Penmachno which lies in the Machno Valley and on toward Cwm Penmachno. After approx 2 miles, turn left by a red telephone box onto a minor road signposted ‘Ffestiniog’. This road climbs steeply up on to the moors, and has spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Watch out for sheep who wander all over the road here! After approx 2 miles, turn left at the junction following the B4407 towards Ysbyty Ifan. Proceed through the farming village of Ysbyty Ifan and turn right onto A5, and then just beyond the village of Pentrefoelas, turn left onto A543 signed Denbigh. Continue over the solitary Denbigh Moors to reach Denbigh. Good views of the mediaeval town can be seen from inside the 13th century castle walls. Part of the old town walls still stand.

Travel through town to reach the A525 signed St Asaph and Rhyl with the ridge of the Clwydian Range prominent on the right. Travel to Trefnant with an opportunity to stop at the Tweedmill Factory Shopping Experience www.tweedmill.co.uk at Llannerch Park before continuing forward to St Asaph , the second smallest city in England and Wales.

If you wish, stop and visit the St Asaph Cathedral www.stasaphcathedral.org.uk, then turn left signed Rhyl and descend the main street. Cross the river bridge and bear right at the roundabout to take first exit onto A55 signed Conwy. There is then an opportunity to visit the impressive 'marble church' at Bodelwyddan whose spire towers to 202ft or a tour of the elegant Victorian house at Bodelwyddan Castle, home to the National Portrait Gallery of Wales.

To avoid the coast road take the B5381 at the back of the Castle to travel to Betws-yn-Rhos. Half a mile beyond the village bear right then keep left, signed Dolwen. At the hamlet of Dolwen turn right onto the Colwyn Bay road. Three miles farther down turn left onto the A55 and enter the modern resort of Colwyn Bay. Continue on the Conwy Road then exit at Llandudno Junction to return to Llandudno.
